In the most lopsided match in GSC finals history, Max Estenger
won his fourth title by crushing Corey McFarlane 6-1, 6-1.
McFarlane won the second game of the match to even the
score at 1-1, before Estenger won the next 10 games in a row.

Estenger used his powerful serve to keep McFarlane from mounting

any kind of momentum. McFarlane tried to chip and charge and move

forward but time and again was passed by Estenger from both wings.

After the match, the champion said, "I did what I had to do to win,
and am very happy about winning. Corey will definitely be a factor
in years to come." McFarlane for his part vowed to one day beat Estenger but had no further comment as he left the BMTC for the long trip back to East New York.

and a feeble return ensued to mercifully put an end to the match.

BREAKING: Rain Washes Out Wednesday Final

The forecast for Wednesday afternoon, June 9 was for heavy rain in the New York Metropolitan region, with cool temperatures, making the likelihood of a finals washout strong. This forecast turned out to be correct. Both players, however have agreed to play the final on Thursday June 10, at 4PM. The weather forecast for Thursday looks very favorable--sunny and 76. We will keep you posted.

McFarlane vs. Estenger, Championship Match Wednesday, June 9, 4:30 PM

Congratulations to Corey McFarlane who will play on Wednesday for the GSC Tennis Championship

Corey McFarlane advanced to his first GSC Tennis Tournament final with a thrilling come from behind victory over Eric Eagon 4-6, 6-0, 7-5, on Monday June 7. McFarlane used his strong net game to pressure Eagon into many unforced errors. Strangely enough, the turning point of the match may have occurred early in the 2nd set when McFarlane took off his t-shirt to reveal a tight, black Under Armor lycra sleeveless shirt that clothed his powerful muscular physique. And right on cue it seemed as if Eagon was intimidated. McFarlane charged the net and began playing an aggressive, daring brand of tennis .

In attendance were vanquished #2, and #3 seeds Khan and Paredes. Both seemed at pains to witness the rise of McFarlane at their expense. Also in attendance was three-time GSC Tennis Champion Max Estenger who has never lost a set to his final's opponent Corey McFarlane. However, this is the first time the two will meet officially in the GSC tournament. Before we get to the final where Estenger will be an overwhelming favorite to capture his unprecedented fourth title, it is important to review McFarlane's breakthrough achievement in this tournament. Last year, he was bounced in the quarters by Paredes, and even this year he was unable to beat either Paredes or Khan in the preliminaries to the tournament. And yet, he has surpassed both of his rivals, despite the doubts from many within his own Phys Ed Department. John Zarcone foolishly predicted an easy win for Eagon. Virgil Aponte fresh off his embarrasing unsuccessful stint as Khan's "coach" also doubted McFarlane's chances.

McFarlane brushed aside these negative forces and in the case of Zarcone said cryptically, "What do you expect? I don't know whether he can even be objective when it comes to someone like me." McFarlane is now 3-0 in the tournament and has gone the full three sets in his last two matches to make it to the finals displaying a high level of fitness. He is guaranteeing a victory Wednesday and will be playing in front of his baby daughter Sidney. Estenger has questioned this stunt and is concerned that the match and what he plans to do to her daddy could traumatize the young 16 month old baby.

As far as Wednesday's final is concerned, McFarlane feels like his concentration needs to be at its zenith. He will rely on his chip and charge tactics to rattle Estenger. Estenger for his part had this comment after the McFarlane-Eagon match: "Everyone will be cheering for Corey on Wednesday, I get that. I welcome that. I am the Yankees, the Lakers, the Patriots, the Federer, the Tiger Woods of this tournament. But on Wednesday, Corey's little Cinderella story will be over. It was nice, everyone likes him, he's a terrific athlete but I will destroy him on the court. I don't care how many babies he brings." When pressed further on his issues with McFarlane, Estenger said, "I don't appreciate some of the things he's done during the tournament that have been disrespectful to the game, the tournament and to other players. That's why I feel it necessary to take it to him on Wednesday. There will be no mercy. I'm glad it's him."

When told of this, Corey McFarlane had one final comment: "I respect everything that Max Estenger has done in this tournament, and he has earned every right to degrade me and everyone else in the draw, including threatening to have me removed from the tournament for minor rules violations. However, championships are won on the court and not on websites!" McFarlane went on to trash the quality of opponents that Estenger has faced: "I also think that it's obvious that I played a much higher caliber of opponent than Estenger. Zarcone wouldn't have even escaped Paredes if they had played."

Could Estenger finally lose in this tournament? Is McFarlane the young, fresh face that could give us an exciting final? Estenger is 12-0 in his four year run here and has yet to drop a set. But he has never met the caliber of athlete that he will meet Wednesday in Corey McFarlane. The world will be cheering for Corey. David meets Goliath circa 2010. Don't miss it!

It can no longer be said that Corey McFarlane cannot or has not beaten Segundo Paredes. In a grueling, three-hour three-
set match McFarlane took it to Paredes 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4. Paredes fought off 7 match points but finally succumbed on the 8th,
late in the evening as the remaining daylight was faint. Though the level of play was inconsistent and at times much too ping-pongy McFarlane did what he had to do to win. He relied on a consistently wicked backhand slice to keep Paredes off balance
throughout the match, and came to the net to put away some easy volleys.

McFarlane must now face upstart Eric Eagon in the semifinals on Monday June 7 at 4:00 PM at the Bernard McIlwain Tennis Center at the Grand Street Campus. The Championship Match is now tentatively set for Wednesday, June 9 4:00 PM.

Estenger Wins Twice Today to Play for Fourth Crown

#1 Seed and three-time defending GSC Tennis Champion Max Estenger beat John Zarcone for the second straight year in the semifinals to punch his ticket to another GSC Championship match, 6-2, 6-2. Zarcone started off strong and had a short-lived 2-1 lead in the opening set before Estenger ran up a string of 10 consecutive games winning the first set 6-2 and then taking a commanding 5-0 lead in the second before Zarcone broke the string with two games of his own. Estenger didn't play particularly well as both players battled windy conditions, but Zarcone made too many unforced errors. Still, for a part-time player, Zarcone had another excellent tournament advancing to the semis for the second straight year. Earlier in the afternoon, Estenger beat Adam Benson 6-1, 6-2, before playing Zarcone.

trip to the GSC Tennis Tournament Semis. He will be an

overwhelming favorite to win. If Estenger defeats Benson,

he will then immediately play Zarcone on the same Court 3 as he did last year while defeating Zarcone in the semis.

And like last year, Estenger has again agreed to play a

doubleheader on Thursday to accommodate Zarcone.

In a dramatic match that took over two hours to complete, Progress teacher Eric Eagon handed EBT Junior Yousaf Khan a devastating defeat 7-6(4), 3-6, 7-6(5) in a three set tiebreak thriller. Khan looked like he had the match well in hand as he led the third set 5 games to 2, but he failed to hold serve twice and Eagon took the match to a climactic tiebreak. There again, Khan had a 5-2 lead in the tiebreak and was just two points from the match. Eagon won the next five points to stun the #2 seed. Eagon remarked later that he was determined to fight until the end, "I'm a teacher, and teacher's never quit." The 23 year-old Wisconsin native was able to neutralize both Khan's powerful serve and his crafty spins and slices made Khan's forehand ineffective.

Eagon now moves on to a spot in the Semifinals Friday where he will meet the winner of tomorrow's Quarterfinal match between Segundo Paredes and Corey McFarlane. McFarlane has never beaten Paredes in three previous matches and Paredes has been in top form lately. An Eagon-Paredes Semifinal promises to be quite exciting!

It wasn't a good day for the kids at GSC today. Not only

was Khan bounced from the tournament but he was

joined by DeJesus and Cordero. Cordero was beaten

by Benson 6-0, 6-0 while Zarcone breezed into his

second straight semifinal by crushing DeJesus 6-2, 6-2.

Afterwards, Zarcone said, "I expected more out of

Dennis."

Meanwhile, tournament officials watched in horror as

McFarlane and Chavez played a bizarre set of tennis

capped by Chavez' eventual quitting after that lone

set which he lost 4-6. Officials privately hinted that

the match was one good reason to make the

tournament an invitational next year with only top

flight players who respect the game.

It was stated that a smaller tournament with perhaps 6

players in a round robin format would eliminate the

shenanigans that transpired on court 1. Officials are

confident that by the end of play Thursday the field will be cleared of

such individuals.

Despite several rain delays and under threatening skies the entire time, the Grand Street Campus Tennis Tournament completed five first round matches Tuesday. In the marquee match-up John Zarcone defeated Anna Markova 6-1, 6-3. Zarcone's power game was too much for Markova as both his serve and forehand were rock solid. Zarcone will now advance to the Quarterfinals where he will meet EBT Junior and GSC Tournament rookie Dennis DeJesus who stunned Bill McAndrews 6-0, 7-5.

In other matches, three-time defending champion Max Estenger easily defeated Rebeca Morel in a double bagel while Segundo Paredes missed out on his double bagel against Lenny Sharpe 6-0, 6-1. Both Lenny and Rebeca are class acts and superb athletes and with another year of tennis, they could be factors in next year's tourney.

#2 seed Yusaf Khan did not play due to an illness to Mark Kollerer but Kollerer will definitely be ready to play Wednesday. Meanwhile, Adam Benson has to wait until Wednesday to play Yarixa Cordero who also had to skip Tuesday due to injury. McFarlane and Chavez will also play their first round match tomorrow at 4PM. Eagon will watch and play the winner of the Khan/Kollerer match tomorrow.

2010 Grand Street Campus Tennis Tournament June 1-7

TIME IS RUNNING OUT TO SIGN-UP!! DEADLINE: Thurs. May 20

The Fourth Annual Grand Street Campus Tennis Tournament will be held this June 1 through June 7 at the Bernard McIlwain Tennis Center at the Grand Street Campus in Brooklyn, New York. This year's tournament promises to be the most competitive ever and will mark the first time that qualifying GSC students will be allowed to participate. The tournament coordinators will be Max Estenger (EBT) and Corey McFarlane (Progress). Corey, who is the Lady Wolves Varsity Basketball coach has also been recently named the coach for the 2010 Lady Wolves GSC Varsity Tennis team. We are also hoping that Marc Kollerer will once again coordinate the consolation bracket.

The purpose of the tournament is to promote tennis at the GSC, camaraderie among GSC staff, students and to identify the two best tennis players at the Grand Street Campus. In addition to allowing perhaps 2 or 3 qualified students to participate, this year's tournament will also have a slightly different draw from previous years. The tournament has grown from 8 players in 2007, to 12 in 2008, and then last year's four round 16 player draw. For the 2010 edition, we will seed only four players--the rest of the player's names will be randomly drawn to fill out the brackets. Theoretically, the #1 seed could play the 5th best player in the first round or the 16th best or someone in between. We will still separate the top four seeds in order to insure that they do not meet until at least the semifinals. All are welcome to come in May to try to qualify for a top four seeding, otherwise we will place you in the general draw.

Yousuf Khan's serve was too much for Paredes

Manbeater Yousuf Khan Destroys Paredes 6-2, 6-2

On Thursday, EBT Junior Yousuf Khan took on the second winningest player in the three-year GSC Tennis Tournament, Segundo Paredes. The match wasn't even close as Khan easily dismantled Paredes 6-2, 6-2. Khan stunned the two-time finalist with an array of shots, but most particularly a wicked kick serve which Paredes was unable to handle. All of this transpired under the watchful eye of Khan's coach Virgil Aponte.

During the first set, Paredes grew irritated as Khan's backhand slice proved tricky for Paredes. He even yelled at Khan during one game to "Play real tennis." In the second set, Khan went to his power game and his forehand obliged with fierce winner after winner. At the end of the match an elated Khan launched a tennis ball through the air and onto the football field. Paredes congratulated Khan on his impressive victory before preposterously offering the youngster some tips on how to improve his game. Rarely does one see a 2-6, 2-6 loser giving out advice on how the winner can improve. He wants a re-match after the break.

Meanwhile, Coach Aponte pointed out that after beating Girl's Tennis Coach McFarlane two weeks ago in straight sets, and now Paredes in straight sets, that Team Khan has its sights set on John Zarcone (a semifinalist last year). "I think Zarcone is an exceptional athlete, but coming off of maternity leave it looks like fatherhood has added a few pounds to Z. I just hope he gives us a match before the tournament. I mean, he did beat Yousuf during the summer, but that was not the Yousuf we saw today." Aponte then added, "Ofcourse, the ultimate target is Estenger, but we have two months to figure that out and Yousuf is way ahead of schedule."

This year the tournament will only seed four players and right now that order beyond Estenger looks like Zarcone, Khan, Paredes. The pre-tournament seedings will proceed on a 2 out of 3 match formula. If a player does not compete for a seeding he/she will not be seeded.

1. Max Estenger--three-time defending champion and improving every year

2. Segundo Paredes--two-time runner up, '09 semifinalist; the heart of a champion if not the skills

3. John Zarcone--a semifinalist in '09; will trying to win it for his new baby girl inspire him?

4. Yousaf Khan--a tennis fanatic and junior EBT student who has played more tennis than anyone else these past 12 months. He could be the man to beat by June.

5. Corey McFarlane--a superb athlete trying to translate those skills into tennis success

Then there is the rest of the field: Aponte, Moccia-Field, Desai, Weber, McAndrews, Kollerer, Benson, Rodriguez, Lee, and Carmona. Who has improved? Will last year's 2009 runner-up Jose Carballido return from Colombia to play in June? What about the presence of Phys Ed teacher Joe Marini's new found passion for tennis? Perhaps there is some ex-college tennis player lurking inside GSC who we don't know about....
